Transforming Into The One Self
If The Spiritual Community is not careful, New Age spirituality runs the real risk of becoming just another quasi religion filled with beliefs in outside forces, monsters, hob goblins, and a host of so-called higher beings and angels, handing out conflicting counsel to the very humans who believe in them and look to them for help. With of course, an inconsistent God or Source who must be courted through certain questionable beliefs, practices or objects. All of which unconsciously mirror the very untruths that gave birth in the first place, to the desire to know truth. Supposition and nice sounding but essentially meaningless ideas are offered as fact, and worse accepted by some who lack discernment and fail to test ideas through practice. All this can easily be corrected by the simple observation that the energy that is the Source, has already created universes, and must therefore be capable enough and wise enough to guide humanity through this awakening and enlightenment puzzle. Every idea that purports to explain or teach the seeker about what should be done as a part of a spiritual Path, should hold up to this observation.
The first time that I as a spiritual neophyte was presented with the idea that I was already that which I was seeking to become, I dismissed it as “spiritual doublespeak,” crafted to to sound profound, but ultimately managed to be only enigmatic and nothing more. After all, how can something be considered a path if the goal is already a reality?. Eventually understanding and acceptance of this simple yet profound declaration made a great difference to my practice. Itis an important part of the ground work that each seeker must perform in order to create a stable foundation on which to build a spiritual practice.
So how is progress on a path that is really not a path measured?. Progress is measured by the degree to which the physical self gives way to the higher self. The path now has a goal, which is the inner transformation that results in one self. This goal is realized when the physical and the spiritual in the seeker becomes one blended being who operates from the innate knowledge, wisdom and power that higher consciousness brings to the enlightened being. Knowing and even accepting a fact or premise, or something that you wish too learn, often happens way ahead of the actual manifestation. Belief that what is being attempted is first of all possible, and also that you can succeed in making your goal a reality. Therefore practice combined with belief, is the modus operandi. Just like learning a new language or learning to drive, practice and focus allows the seeker to finally transform knowledge into mastery. Practice is nothing more than removing the old layers of illusion and allowing the truth to to take hold. There is a great quote that speaks to this idea of effort and practice. It states; “The master has failed more times that the beginner has even tried.”
No amount of reading, and gathering information or attending workshops can ever take the place of putting what has been learned into effect.
But let’s take a step back for a moment; if “The seeker is already that which he or she is seeking to become,” then it could be rationally assumed that practice should be unnecessary. This is both true and untrue. Each seeker has within him or herself the power to create incredible changes in the blink of an eye. It is only the weight of illusion, cultural and personal beliefs about what is possible, that makes it necessary why most need to practice. Through the seeking information, questioning the self and asking for guidance, the seeker succeeds in replacing erroneous beliefs and limitations in increments and installing new beliefs which supports the true reality of who they really are. Questions to the self about how a fully enlightened being speaks, behaves thinks, creates and awaken, are on par for the course. Next, further questioning and reasoning to include the how, what, where, when etc. concerning the responses received, further stimulates the awakening of intuition and knowing. It is then that the seeker will be able to see him/herself incrementally growing in knowledge, guided by the inner voice.
Two important points to note here is that the so termed “Spiritual Path’ is highly personal in spite of the basic truths that permeate each path. And there is absolutely not one single Guru or teacher on earth, that is as, or more proficient than the inner teacher. To imagine otherwise, is to ignore simple reasoning: Without a teacher or Guru, any person who is, physically, financially or for other reasons, would then be doomed to remain in darkness, unable to evolve into enlightenment because of the lack of an outer teacher, while ignoring the supreme teacher within.
One of the most glaring stumbling blocks to growth on the spiritual seeker’s path, is the inability to get outside of limiting fear and trust the self. In order to progress, the seeker must arrive at the place where enough useful and resonant information has been gathered, and that information is then acted on. Practice as we all know, makes perfect..
Another stumbling block that the seeker often has, is the inability to actually see with inner knowing, as well as emotionally and spatially feel themselves as the consciousness within their physical form, and then through extrapolation, see themselves as The One Self or Source. While most seekers have no difficulty in accepting the premise intellectually, anything beyond that seems to be too great a leap in the imagination. Yet this is exactly what is necessary and where the the seeker’s path is headed. Most seekers, still labor with the definition of God. Even when they have accepted that there is some Primal Cause which could appropriately stand in for a God figure, as The original creator. They nevertheless still often fail to cut the ties with the fire and brim-stone version of the God of religion that has assaulted our collective consciousness from the time that we were all children. Furthermore these same seekers if asked, could not explain why humans seem to be obviously at the mercy of nature and other forces, if we have higher selves capable of creating any miracle. So the problem of actually seeing the self as God or Source is obviously a difficult one. Yet even this seemingly flawed reality has a simple and easy to understand explanation when the student is ready to learn the truth.
The brave seeker not only questions the inner self, but quickly elevates it. Praising, expressing, gratitude for this guiding self and it’s power to direct Life Force and create the most miraculous reality is something that the seeker should set aside a few minutes each day to consciously and purposefully perform. This looking inward with gratitude, joy, curiosity and awe, produces rapid measurable results. The seeker will soon find that there is an intelligent and loving friend equally determined, who is waiting for his or her attention.
Another favorite quote, this one from Frank Kafka wonderfully expresses the essence of what takes place between the inner and outer selves: “You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet, still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.”
The Inner Self waits with anticipation for the seeker to unravel the errors of belief and turn within. It is the greatest friend and teacher that the seeker will ever have the good fortune to meet. And as knowledge and confidence grows, it will unfold more and more amazing secret and abilities to the earnest Seeker.
